After sailing the Whitsundays, a few days on Daydream Island sure is a must. So after spending some more time snorkelling the delights of the Great Barrier, spotting rainbow fish and coral trout, that’s where we were headed.

Upon our arrival at the island, we were greeted by a hotel receptionist who gave us all nautical sea shell necklaces to commemorate our stay. She then assisted us to our accommodation, which was a spacious 3 bed room overlooking the ‘living reef’. It’s not every day your neighbors turn out to be sting rays and reef sharks!

In like manner, after settling in to our accommodation, I was itching to get out and venture our new surroundings and so journeyed along the boardwalk to the islands longest beach, sunset beach, to sit peacefully in a hammock and watch the sun go down.

Along my walk, I spotted a peculiar looking stone sculpture entitled ‘ The Three Stone Men’ and the story behind it was as follows:

Legend has it that hundreds of years ago, three brothers were sailing their ship, Ulyseas, across uncharted waters in what we now distinguish as The Great Barrier Reef. The ship collided with the reef Bed of West Molle, causing such damage that the captain deemed it irreparable and so ordered the burying of the treasure on board. The treasure was buried on the island, at a place only known to the captain and his crew, After they managed to repair the damages the ship set sail once more, only to flounder after a major storm, the ship sank, ,killing all men on bard except for the three brothers.

They swam ashore and vowed to return to the island to locate the treasure. However when they arrived, Medusa was already there and the brothers stumbled upon her at the middle of the island where they were immediately turned to stone at the exact point they can be found today.

The treasure has to this day, never been found and so legend has it that if someone can find a way for the three brothers to be turned from stone, they’ll tell you where the treasure is buried.

So if you decide to visit the island, keep your ‘aye ayes’ peeled capt’n, because you might just come to a great fortune.
