That morning, we were due to set off along a two gorge boat cruise along the Katherine River, and after experiencing the beauty of the East Alligator river with an aboriginal guide, I was beginning to wonder how this experience would level up to it. But once again, Australia never failed to surprise me and I was left amazed by the beauty of it.
Katherine Gorge, alongside the Great Barrier Reef, was one of the most spectacular sceneries I have ever witnessed in my entire life and it made me realise how truly incredible nature is, and how as humans, our role is to protect it and help it to thrive.
I’m not going to give this too much of a description, as I feel words cannot do this place justice and the photos are better quality than my writing skills. So let’s just say the scenery was absolutely spellbinding. I’d rather persuade you all to go there, than to see it through my eyes as I believe that you can never truly know what something is like until you see it for yourselves.
Even more so, by choosing to explore the Gorge by boat, we could get a good look at it in a shorter amount of time and had knowledgeable guides to distinguish the flora and fauna and explain the geology and history of the area.
As well as cruising along the river, we were also able to leave the boat to explore the Gorges we visited on foot and so I climbed up to the top of the rocks and you could see right out across the gorge. The sandstone cliffs, tinted by the sun, were amber in color with shrubs shooting from the crevices, and there were falls and rapids which were flowing vigorously along the river. It was an area truly bursting with nature, with freshwater crocodiles distributed along the river throughout the year.
Saltwater crocs can also be found here during the wet season and in terms of bird life, Ospreys, Cockatoos, Great Bowerbirds, White Gaped Honeyeaters and Red Winged Parrots are a few to name which can be spotted.
On that note, a haven for nature lovers, geology enthusiasts and just those who love to explore the beauty of our planet, Katherine Gorge is high on my list as one of my favourite places I visited during my trip, and I think it just could be yours too.
